Ahead of International Day of Yoga 2022,

the United Nations reflected, “People around the world embraced yoga to stay healthy and rejuvenated and to fight social isolation and depression during the pandemic. Yoga is also playing a significant role in the psycho-social care and rehabilitation of Covid-19 patients in quarantine and isolation. It is particularly helpful in allaying their fears and anxiety.”

It stated, “The essence of yoga is balance – not just balance within the body or that between the mind and the body, but also balance in the human relationship with the world. Yoga emphasises the values of mindfulness, moderation, discipline and perseverance. When applied to communities and societies, Yoga offers a path for sustainable living.” from MSN

International Day of Yoga, On 21st June 2021

Standard

IDY 2021 is the 7th edition of International Day of Yoga. On 21st June 2021, this day will be marked as 7th Edition. The United Nations General Assembly recognized 21st June as the International Day of Yoga at the initiative of Hon`ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi in 2014 via a unanimous vote.

Yoga is a trend that has been flourishing from the years; rather this has become a trendsetter in maintaining both physical and mental well-being. Each Yogic activity is a key to improving flexibility, strength, balance and attaining harmony. Yoga Portal  https://yoga.ayush.gov.in/ is a platform to help people embrace, practice and enjoy yoga every day. It is a perfect gateway to search for the best yoga resources, common yoga protocol training videos and the latest yoga events to take part in.

2020-2021 is Covid pandemic in world . Yoga is a discipline based on an extremely subtle science, which focuses on bringing harmony between mind and body. It is an art and science of healthy living. Yoga leads to a perfect harmony between mind and body, man and nature, individual consciousness and universal consciousness. Yoga helps to build up psycho-physiological health, emotional harmony; and manage daily stress and its consequences. Yoga is also useful in conditions where stress is believed to play a role(1). Various yogic practices such as Yogasanas, Pranayama, Dhyana (meditation), cleansing and relaxation practices etc. are known help modulate the physiological response to stressors.

Yoga Expert Jyoti Patel is doing YOGA everyday, since more then 25 years . Yoga give flexibility to your body.

Vasant Panchami

Standard

Vasant Panchami

1) Vasant Panchami highlights the coming of spring

Vasant Panchami (vasant meaning “spring” and panchami meaning “fifth”) is a festival that falls on the fifth day of the Hindu lunar month of Magha (January-February in the Western calendar) marking the beginning of winter’s end and the coming of spring.

Known in India as the “king of all seasons,” spring not only brings warm relief from the cold of winter, but it is also the time when the mustard crop blooms flowers of yellow, a color that symbolizes knowledge, light, energy, prosperity, and peace. It is thus considered an auspicious time to begin new ventures, like getting married, buying a house, or starting a job.

2) Goddess Saraswati is worshipped on this day

Vasant Panchami is also celebrated as the birthday of the Goddess Saraswati (the goddess of knowledge, wisdom, learning, and art), and commemorates the time she is said to have blessed the great Sanskrit poet Kalidasa, who is believed to have lived sometime during the 4th-5th century CE.

According to legend, there was an extraordinarily intelligent princess named Vidyottama who had defeated many prominent scholars in debate. When it was time for her to marry, she declared she would only do so with the person who was smarter than her. A group of pandits, who had found her to be overly arrogant, however, decided they would teach her a lesson by tricking her into marrying a fool instead. One day they came across a man named Kalidasa who was cutting the same branch he was sitting on from a tree. Deciding this was the fool they were looking for, the men presented him to the princess as a highly learned sage, and convinced her to marry him. Deceived by the pandits, she agreed to a swift marriage with Kalidasa. When Vidyottama inevitably discovered that Kalidasa wasn’t the knowledgeable man she thought he was, she threw him out of the palace. Dejected and ashamed, Kalidasa was determined to end his life, but was stopped by the Goddess Saraswati, who had appeared and directed him to take a dip in the nearby river instead. Following her instruction, he submerged himself in the water. When he came out, he was no longer the Kalidasa of old. He was endowed with incredible intelligence and wisdom, and eventually became a highly renowned poet.

Though varying accounts of this story exist, with details that don’t always match, Kalidasa’s transformation is always similar. Devotees thus pray to Saraswati on Vasant Panchami in hopes that they too can become a recipient of her bestowed wisdom and intelligence.

3) Vasant Panchami also commemorates the God of Love

Another narrative connected to Vasant Panchami involves a time the god of love, Kamadeva, tried to wake Shiva from his meditation.

Described with varying details in the Matsya Purana, Shaiva Purana, and other numerous retellings, the story goes that Parvati, a manifestation of the feminine Divine, was deeply devoted to Shiva and wanted him as her husband. Shiva, however, had gone into deep meditation after his wife, Sati, had died, and thus nothing Parvati tried could garner his attention. Kamadeva, the god of love, was eventually asked to break Shiva out of his meditation and incite in him desire for Parvati who was, in fact, Sati in her previous life. Agreeing to help, Kamadeva created a congenial spring-time atmosphere, and fired five desire-inducing arrows at Shiva. Furious to have his meditation disturbed, Shiva opened his third eye and immediately burned Kamadeva to ashes. After learning of what had transpired, Kamadeva’s wife, Rati, approached Shiva and begged him to bring her husband back to life. Feeling compassion, Shiva resuscitated Kamadeva, but under the condition that only Rati would be able to see him in his physical form. To all others, he would be a disembodied spirit of love and desire.

Vasant Panchami is hence remembered not only as the day Kamadeva was asked to stir Shiva’s desire for Parvati, but also as the time of year Kamadeva stimulates the passions of both the earth and its people, as the lands come alive with new blossoms.

4) Surya is also honored on this day

The founding of the Deo-Sun Temple (a shrine dedicated to the Sun God Surya in the Indian state of Bihar) is also celebrated by many on Vasant Panchami

A symbol of wisdom and spiritual light, Surya brings an end to winter, providing the sunlight needed for trees to grow new leaves, and flowers to blossom. After months of cold and short days, Surya’s warmth invigorates and energizes people out of reclusion, inspiring them to make fruitful plans and take on new challenges.

People in the state of Bihar, therefore, honor Surya by glorifying him through song and dance, as well as cleaning the statues at the Deo-Sun Temple.

5) How to celebrate Vasant Panchami

Vasant Panchami is celebrated in various ways depending on the devotee’s focus of worship.

Many honor the Goddess Saraswati by waking up early and dressing in yellow (believed to be her favorite color), eating and sharing yellow sweets and snacks, and performing puja to her deity. Because Saraswati is the goddess of learning and wisdom, she is also prayed to by students who want to be successful in their studies. Others honor Shiva and Parvati by offering the couple mango flowers and ears of wheat, while others, as said earlier, commemorate Surya. Of course, one can appreciate all deities associated with Vasant Panchami, as worship is in no way bound to any one.

Whoever is being honored, it’s common for festivities to include family and friends coming together for celebratory feasting, dancing, and singing, similar to what is generally seen at any Hindu seasonal holiday.

Natarajasana

Lord of the Dance Pose or Dancer Pose is a standing, balancing, back-bending asana in modern yoga as exercise. It is derived from a pose in the classical Indian dance form Bharatnatyam, which is depicted in temple statues in the Nataraja Temple, Chidambaram.

The proposal to start Yoga Day was introduced by PM Modi in his address during the opening of the 69th session of the General Assembly in 2014.

However, this year, due to Social Distancing  measures adopted by most countries, the theme set by the United Nations is “Yoga for Health – Yoga at Home”. The World Health Organization (WHO) mentions yoga as a means to improve health in its Global Action Plan on Physical Activity 2018–2030: More active people for a healthier world.
“Yoga is an invaluable gift from our ancient tradition. Yoga embodies unity of mind and body, thought and action, a holistic approach that is valuable to our health and our well-being. Yoga is not just about exercise; it is a way to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and nature,” he had said.
Yoga promotes principles of peace, rights and well-being
Yoga promotes principles of peace, rights & well being that UN is working towards.Celebrating #InternationalYogaDay, we’re sending message of unity&connection, one that is of substantial value at time of great challenges but also great opportunities for multilateralism
Yoga is something India is proud to pass on to the West (now world), and they have embraced it with all the vigor. Yoga poses and practices help to improve stamina, strength, flexibility and also mental well being.
Yoga is the perfect exercise to improve your physical and mental well being By focusing on mindfulness, breathing and the movements of your body, it can help you ‘switch off’, de-stress & unwind.  #InternationalDayOfYoga2020
Today on International Yoga Day 2020, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed the benefits of yoga and how this is helping the world in the fight against corona-virus pandemic. “Yoga is helping us in this fight against this pandemic. The pranayamas help us in building immunity and resolving respiratory illnesses.”

Stressing that Yoga doesn’t discriminate and instead helps in building immunity, PM Modi said, “Yoga enhances our quest for a healthier planet. It has emerged as a force for unity and deepens the bonds of humanity. It does not discriminate, it goes beyond race, color, gender, faith, and descent. The world is realizing the need of Yoga, even more, today due to the corona-virus pandemic. If our immunity is strong, then it helps in fighting against the disease. There are Yoga practices that boost our immunity and improve metabolism. Corona-virus attacks our respiratory system. ‘Pranayam’, a breathing exercise is something that helps us the most in making our respiratory system strong.”

Highlighting the importance of exercises, PM Modi requested citizens to make yoga a part of their regular life. “All of us are doing yoga at home with the family. International Day of Yoga gives a message of universal brotherhood. Yoga gives mental peace, helps in bringing positivity. If we can fine-tune our chords of health and hope, the day is not far away when world will witness the success of healthy and happy humanity. Yoga can definitely help us make this happen.”

21st JUNE 2019_Inernational Yoga Day

_JYOTI PATEL

2019_IYD

It’s June, which means International Yoga Day is just around the corner! For many, this has become a wonderful annual tradition to honor yoga and the connection between people and nature.

International Day of Yoga is celebrated on June 21st,

It’s that time of year again, to refresh, renew and revitalize!

In September 2014, at the United Nations General Assembly, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi announced that he wanted to have a day of yoga to honor the connection between man and nature, health and wellbeing, and oneness with self.

In September 2014, at the United Nations General Assembly, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi announced that he wanted to have a day of yoga to honor the connection between man and nature, health and wellbeing, and oneness with self.

As he stated, “For us in India, respect for nature is an integral part of spiritualism. We treat nature’s bounties as sacred. Yoga is an invaluable gift of India’s ancient tradition. Yoga embodies unity of Mind & Body ; thought and action; restraint and fulfillment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature. By changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help us deal with climate change and in bettering our wellbeing. Let us work towards adopting an International Yoga Day.”

He also proposed celebrating this day on June 21st, which has significance in many parts of the world and is also known as the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere and the shortest day in the Southern Hemisphere.

The first International Yoga Day was on June 21, 2015 and it has been a growing event since then.

1. Practice yoga

This one’s an obvious idea, but I have to cover it.Regardless of how much time you have, I challenge you to connect breath with movement on June 21st. Step onto your mat, onto the ground, or simply sit up taller in your office chair, and CONNECT.

Find that sweet spot where the exterior becomes fuzzy and the interior fires up…. you know that place I’m talking about, I know you do.

As a nation, as a community, as a group of collective consciousness, we can and will raise the vibration of this world with our breath and movement. Believe in the magic of yoga, it’s there, waiting to be tapped into!

2. Change your Facebook profile pic

I love this neat idea and hope you will too!

Just like people have changed their profile pics for the devastating attacks on Paris & Brussels or the celebration of same-sex marriage rights, the yoga community is offering up the same opportunity.

I Want to Support

Pretty awesome, right?

The idea behind the overlay is to spread the message of yoga, invite new people to the practice, and strengthen the current community.

Let’s hope the social media campaign catches on & spreads like wildfire. The more yogis, the better off this world is…

 3. Invite a friend to yoga

Like I said above, the more the yogis in this world the better…

And the only way to increase/strengthen the community is to add to it. This is where us current yogis come into the equation.

I challenge you to invite a friend, co-worker, or anyone who’s not currently part of the yoga community to your yoga studio, an outdoor yoga class, or any type of yoga event. As we’ve all experienced, breaking into the yoga community is intimidating at first.  And while we know there’s nothing to be intimated about, it’s a natural reaction to anything foreign (especially weird shapes and bendy people).

Over the four years I’ve been practicing, I’ve made it a point to consciously invite people to practice alongside me…. and not surprisingly, these same people are now committed yogis! So please, invite anyone and everyone, be there to soften the first-time jitters, and to experience the magic that will take place….

…. that magic being – connecting back to oneself, feeling the body again or for the first time ever, and creating shapes never imagined.

4. Give Back

This yoga to-do is my biggest focus…. yet for some reason, I rarely find myself doing it.

Giving back is a conundrum, we know we’re supposed to do it, the act of it genuinely makes us feel good, but when push comes to shove – we cherish our free time and use it on ourselves.

This summer is our time yogis, let’s give back to the community.

Below are a few ideas to inspire us:

  • Lead a free yoga class in a public setting or start a local donation-based class.
  • Donate your precious dollars and/or time to these amazing organizations –
  • Donate your time to your local community, whatever movement or organization interests you, go do that!

5. Find an event near you

And lastly, if there’s an event celebrating International Yoga Day, for the love of yoga – go be part of it!

Grab a friend, family member, yoga studio member, or go by yourself and participate! As I’ve said numerous times now, the stronger our breath and movement is, the more we can help change this world through our yoga practice (which is insane, but so true).

If you live in India, the mecca of all yoga events takes place. And if you live in NYC, Times Square shuts down and hosts yoga classes all damn day

And if there’s no event taking place in your local community, take the initiative to start one!

Yogis and non-yogis, I hope these ideas help spark a fire within you to support the yoga movement,

especially on International Yoga Day!
